DAY 1: OVERNIGHT FLIGHT: Depart from the USA with your college students.
DAY 2: BANGKOK: Arrive in Bangkok. The city is an explosion of lights, sounds, sights, and especially taste. Devour a midnight snack at one of the many street vendors near your hotel. Grilled beef, pork and fish, and expertly cooked rice will pull you right into the moment and make you realize “I really am in Thailand!” Head up to your hotel room and end the day as a weary traveler soon to be reborn as an adventurous explorer.
DAY 3: BANGKOK: At its core, Bangkok is a sleepy Thai village with a really loud soundtrack of traffic and nightlife. Many cities brag about the contrasts between old and new contained within their borders, but it’s no joke in Bangkok. Here gold Buddha statues and bright neon lights join hands and race to the future. Bangkok loves its temples. Wat Arun is considered to be the most famous featuring a soaring nearly 150 foot-high spire decorated with tiny pieces of colored glass and Chinese porcelain. Wat Pho houses a 100-foot statue of Buddha covered in gold leaf lying on its side. Even Buddha needs a rest every now and again. Wat the Wat?
DAY 4: BANGKOK: Wake up, it’s time to shop! The amulet market near Wat Mahathat is a souvenir haven for you and your students. Sort through the many varieties of Buddha statues and find that special one that will bring you good fortune. As the day comes to a close, board an overnight train at the Bangkok Railway Station bound for Chang Mai. Your lucky new Buddha may just get you upgraded to first class.
DAY 5: CHANG MAI: Wake up in Thailand’s “Rose of the North” a cultural and natural wonderland boasting ethnic diversity and hospitality that will knock your socks off. Chiang Mai literally means “New City” and retains all of the charms that its name suggests despite it recently celebrating its 720th birthday. Spend your day wandering through the colorful streets visiting local markets and ancient temples. Mingle with the locals for a true Thai experience off the touristy grid.
DAY 6: CHANG MAI: Get a really early start today and spend some time with some residents of Thailand who are almost extinct! The Elephant Nature Park is an ambitious project that rescues these majestic animals and provides a sanctuary for elephants from all over Thailand. Get up some close and personal with these beautiful creatures; feed them, pet them, and participate in their care with the park’s dedicated staff. Promise to stay in touch with your new elephant friends and head to the hills to the villages of hill tribes of Northern Thailand. These folks settled in these parts primarily after the socialist revolutions in China, Burma, and Laos. Most of their customs, rituals, and clothing have remained untouched for centuries. They will welcome you and your college students with open arms and invite you to be a part of their ancient culture. If you didn’t like history before, you will leave the villages with a new respect for that class you take between gym and lunch. The Night Bazaar awaits you back in Chiang Mai for an evening of shopping and incredible food.
DAY 7: CHIANG MAI: It’s been quite the adventure. Today, take it a little easier and set out to experience Chiang Mai on your own. Armed with your selfie stick and your google maps, see the sites with your friends. At the end of the day, gather for a farewell dinner with your entire group and compare notes on this life-changing journey.
DAY 8: RETURN FLIGHT HOME: Depart Chiang Mai with your college students. Arrive back in the USA. Welcome home!
